Close Encounter of the Bison Kind | Face-to-Face in Yellowstone

The morning was quiet—until a massive American bison stepped onto the road and headed straight toward me. With each heavy hoofbeat, the distance closed. In seconds, an ordinary morning in Yellowstone became a raw, unforgettable encounter with one of North America’s most powerful animals.

In this video photo album, I use still photography to relive the moment through images captured as it unfolded—the immense shoulders filling the frame, the thunderous weight behind each step, and the instant the bison stopped and turned its gaze directly toward me. I remained motionless and silent as it chose its path and passed close by, leaving only the sound of its movement and the camera’s shutter between us.

Wildlife safety matters: This was not an encounter I sought. Bison are exceptionally fast, unpredictable, and capable of causing serious injury or death. Never approach, crowd, or provoke wildlife. I used a telephoto lens and maintained a respectful distance whenever possible; the bison unexpectedly entered the road and passed my stationary position.

Watch as a fleeting Yellowstone moment becomes a story of scale, tension, and respect—a close encounter measured not in minutes, but in heartbeats.
